When you're ordering a cube storage insert, one of the first decisions you'll make is finish: unfinished MDF or white melamine. It's a small choice that makes a real difference in how your insert looks, performs, and holds up over time.

Here's what you need to know to choose the right one for your shelf and your supplies.

What Is MDF?

MDF stands for medium-density fibreboard — a manufactured wood product made from compressed wood fibers and resin. It's dense, smooth, and consistent throughout, which makes it ideal for precision-cut inserts that need to fit snugly inside a cube opening.

Our unfinished MDF inserts are approximately 0.21–0.25" thick and a natural brownish color. Because they're made from a natural material, the color and appearance of each piece may vary slightly — this is normal and expected. They're strong, sturdy, and ready to use straight out of the box.

"Unfinished" means the surface has no coating or paint applied. The MDF is left in its natural state.

What Is Melamine?

Melamine is a coating applied to MDF — specifically, a white melamine layer bonded to the surface of the board. The result is a smooth, bright white finish that's easy to clean, waterproof, and scratch-resistant.

Our white melamine inserts use the same MDF core as the unfinished version, with a melamine coating on the faces and white iron-on melamine edge banding applied to the front-facing edges. The remaining edges are left unfinished).

When to Choose Unfinished MDF

Unfinished MDF is the right choice when:

• You plan to paint it. If you want to match a specific shelf color or add a custom finish, unfinished MDF is the better starting point. Prime it first for best results.
• The insert will be mostly hidden. If your insert is packed with yarn, fabric, or paper and the insert itself won't be visible, the finish doesn't matter much. Save the money and go unfinished.
• You're on a budget. Unfinished MDF gives you the same structural performance at a lower price point.

When to Choose White Melamine

White melamine is the right choice when:

• Your shelf is white. If you have a white Kallax, white BHG cube organizer, or white Threshold shelf, melamine blends right in. The insert looks like it belongs there rather than like an afterthought.
• You want a clean, finished look. The melamine coating and banded front edges give the insert a polished appearance, especially visible in open or lightly loaded cubes.
• Easy cleaning matters. If you're storing supplies that might leave dust, lint, or residue — yarn fiber, paper scraps, craft materials — a melamine surface wipes clean quickly.
• You're in a humid environment. Craft rooms, basements, or spaces with variable humidity are better served by melamine's moisture resistance.
  

The Short Answer

If your shelf is white and you want the insert to look intentional, choose melamine. If you plan to paint it, it'll be hidden, or you're watching your budget, unfinished MDF works just as well structurally.
