9 cube organizer

If you've ever stared at a shelf full of open cubes and thought "there has to be a better way" — there is. Cube storage inserts are small, tool-free accessories that fit inside standard cube shelving units to subdivide, organize, and maximize every square inch of space.

They're one of the most underrated organization tools out there, and once you know they exist, you'll wonder how you managed without them.

What Is a Cube Storage Insert?

A cube storage insert is a panel or set of panels designed to fit inside a single cube of a modular shelving unit — like an IKEA Kallax, Better Homes & Gardens Cube Organizer, or Threshold/Brightroom Cube Shelf. Inserts are sized to fit snugly inside the cube opening without tools, screws, or adhesives.

They come in different styles depending on what you need to store. The two most useful types are dividers and adjustable shelves.

The Two Types Worth Knowing

X Divider Cube Insert

The X Divider Cube Insert is made from two interlocking boards that slide together to form an X shape inside your cube. This splits the cube into four equal quadrants — perfect for items that need to be stored horizontally and stay separated.

Best for storing:

  • Yarn skeins and balls
  • Wine bottles
  • Spray cans and aerosols
  • Rolls of fabric, paper, or wrapping supplies
  • Tall bottles or containers

Assembly takes about 30 seconds — just slide the two boards together and drop it into your cube. No tools, no hardware, no measuring.

Adjustable Shelf Organizer Cube Insert

The Adjustable Shelf Organizer Cube Insert adds one to nine horizontal shelves inside a cube. Two side panels with 9 sets of pin holes sit inside the cube walls, and you place shelves at whatever height works for what you're storing.

Best for storing:

  • 12×12 scrapbook paper and cardstock
  • Board games and puzzles
  • Books, notebooks, and binders
  • Figurines, amiibos, and collectibles
  • Flat craft supplies

This insert works best when your cube shelf is placed against a wall or has a back panel. It cannot be used vertically, so plan your cube layout accordingly.

Which Cube Shelves Do They Fit?

Our inserts are custom-sized for the three most popular cube shelving brands in the US:

  • IKEA Kallax: 13-3/16" wide × 13-3/16" tall × 15" deep
  • Better Homes & Gardens Cube Organizer: 13" wide × 13" tall × 15" deep
  • Threshold/Brightroom Cube Organizer Shelf: 13-7/16" wide × 13-7/16" tall × 14-3/8" deep

Each insert is made to order in the correct size for your shelf — so before you order, just confirm which brand you have.

What Finish Should You Choose?

Both inserts are available in two finishes:

  • Unfinished MDF: A natural brownish color, approximately 0.21–0.25" thick. Strong and sturdy. Great if you plan to paint or stain it yourself.
  • White Melamine: White MDF with a melamine coating — easy to clean, waterproof, and scratch-resistant. The front-facing edges are banded with white iron-on melamine edge banding for a clean, finished look. The best choice if your shelf is white and you want the insert to blend in seamlessly.

Do You Actually Need Them?

If you use your cube shelf for anything smaller than a basket or bin, yes — you probably do. Open cubes are great for large, uniform items, but they're inefficient for the kind of mixed, varied supplies most crafters, hobbyists, and home organizers actually have.

Inserts let you use the full depth and height of each cube without items tipping, rolling, or piling up. They're especially valuable in craft rooms, where supplies come in every shape and size and the shelf needs to work hard every day.

Ready to Get Organized?

If you're storing yarn, fabric, or rolls, start with the X Divider Cube Insert. If you're storing paper, books, or flat supplies, the Adjustable Shelf Organizer Cube Insert is your best bet. And if you have a mix of both — you'll probably want one of each.
